Panic Attacks in Children Is a Fallout of the Modern World

Childhood is supposed to be the most carefree and enjoyable period of our life. Until a few decades ago, this statement held true. Today, however the competition and demands that are imposed on children by society, parents, expectations of peers and elders in general put tremendous pressure on children from a very early age.

Prevention Is Better than Cure: Treating Panic Attacks in Children

The child today, in order to be successful, has to be good at school and sports and has to be aware of his/her political and economical environment. More often than not, he has to face issues like bullying, discrimination, uneven competition, etc on their own because parents are too busy earning a living or building a career.

Besides, all these factors sometimes children also have to face and handle death in the family, divorces, separations, sexual abuse, unreasonable demands on their physical and mental capacities, and domestic quarrels in their homes. You will agree that prevention is always better than cure. However, the first and foremost thing here is to identify whether your child suffers from panic attacks. In order to do this, you will need to stay connected with your child; share his/her thoughts and observe his or her day-to-day behavior closely. Anxiety is easy to spot and this is the first step on the ladder to stop and prevent panic attacks in children.

Symptoms to Watch Out for

Watch out for symptoms such as change in sleeping pattern, appetite, sudden mood swings, anger, weepiness, violence bouts, shunning friends and outdoors. These are just a few of the signs that point towards the build up of anxiety.

Often, closeness and sympathetic handling usually dispels the panic attacks in children. However, if you find that panic attacks continue unabated in spite of continuous home counseling and emotional care then may be it is better that medication is introduced. There are several natural remedies as well, and depending upon the advice of the doctor, the panic attacks in children can be prevented, controlled and totally cured with the correct medication.

The most important factor still remains the parents’ love and involvement in their children’s lives. Children need emotional backup much more than they need physical support. If they were deprived of it during their childhood, they would automatically switch to the basic survival mode, and hence depend upon their inner reflexes for survival rather than the support of their parents. This is when panic attacks in children might become a common occurrence.
