Anger
Management for You and Your
Child
Anger is a
feeling that can easily overtake your common sense and control
you if you don’t recognize and deal effectively with it in
time. It can harm you as well as others who are around you,
such as family and friends.
Children
and Anger
Childhood is
the time when we learn, absorb and imitate our parents, heroes
and idols. Good or bad, children at a very young age are very
impressionable. They can hardly differentiate between good and
bad. Usually, the tendency is to believe that whatever our
parents do is good and probably the best way to approach and
solve a problem. Therefore, parents must be very careful in
what they expose their children to -- such as road rage,
marital fights and/or any type of violence or
abuse.
Childhood is
the time when anger starts to build as you are in a position of
subordination and are always supposed to do only what you are
told or made to do. Children who see parents frustrated, angry,
negative and/or fighting with each other will often grow up to
be resentful of life and negative themselves.
Recognize
Your Child’s Behavior
It is important
that you do your best to refrain from angry outbursts in front
of your children. Let your child express himself/herself freely
so you can observe if there is any anger or hidden or
resentment.
Children that
go through a divorce with their parents – especially if it is a
ugly one -- can end up being frustrated and angry at life for
very simple reasons like: not having a family like their
friends or seeing their parents sad, angry and/or resentful of
each other.
If you are
going through a stressful time, you should practice some anger
management strategies that will help you and your child deal
with the difficult situation together. Anger management therapy
will allow you to bond with your child through the pain and
suffering that you are BOTH currently experiencing. Not only
will it allow you to understand and deal with your present
feelings one day at a time, but it will also help you to learn
to control and prevent future outbursts as
well.
Anger
management provides parents and children with helpful
techniques to combat anger issues and situations, which will
lead you to more stable and serene relationships. Classes and
courses for anger management for family members are available
locally in therapy sessions, online or in books. All three
solutions are beneficial but generally the one that yields the
best results is the practice that puts you in contact with
other people who are in similar situations as yourself, so you
might want to try to join an anger management
group.
